David's idea makes sense, but I know another use for it.

On some cars like the LeBarons and the 91-95 minivans, a single CD player could be mounted in the cubby hole below the radio and used the cable for that, I believe.  I don't know if the cable interfaced with a trunk mounted changer with a remote control or not.  Later radios added CD controls to the radio to run the trunk changers.
