I had an '88 Daytona with the Infinity sound system that did the same thing. It was the door speaker that was powered, and failed. It was under warranty at the time, ('90) so I didn't actually do the repair, Dodge did. The Infinity speakers do have amplifiers attached to them at the speaker itself. The Infinity stereos often had powered speakers. This meant an amp at the speaker is likely your problem. On most FWD Mopars the speaker grilles just popped off on little clips and the speaker could then be unscrewed. I don't know about Imperials though. I'm sure somebody that knows better will chime in.
