IML: '73 LeBaron speaker wiring

Interesting observation from a weekend of wire chasing and speaker swapping: my 1973 LeBaron's rear speakers appear to be reversed! 

One of the 32-year-old speakers in the package shelf had begun to buzz and sound muffled, so it was time for Son and I to make a run to the auto stereo store and then spend an afternoon lying in the trunk. Fortunately, an Imp trunk gives plenty of room for lying, even with the rear air installation. 

The old 6x9's came out without a problem, and the new ones (with much heavier magnets) bolted up without a problem, but I noticed when checking the installation that when I fade the radio full front and full left (to get sound from only the speaker in the dash on the driver's side) and then roll the fader to full rear, the RIGHT rear speaker is the only one that sounds! 

As nearly as I can tell the system was unmolested (the old dry-rotted speakers were stamped "Chrysler" with authentic-seeming parts numbers), so I don't have a clue as to whether it came from the factory that way (I can't believe that) or someone swapped leads at some point. 

Point of reference: the radio is not stock, but aftermarket. The original AM/FM/8TK went belly-up a couple of years ago concurrent with a catastrophic distributor failure, and I put a "Road Gear" (Autozone brand) AM/FM/cassette in the dash. (It's black, not silver like so many aftermarket radios, and has knobs and a "slide rule" display rather than dancing LED's, so it doesn't clash too much with the otherwise original dash.) Rather than cutting the car's wiring harness, I clipped the male connector from the dead radio and wired it to the pigtails of the aftermarket radio, so it just plugs into the female connector in the factory harness. 

Any observations from wiring gurus on the list would be appreciated. Absent strong protest from more knowledgeable list members, this weekend Son and I will be swapping the leads, though.
