Re: IML: 1990 imp

Jon. Welcome to the list. It's always nice to see more 90's owners joining
up. As owners of the most recent generation of Chrysler Corporation's
finest automotive efforts, we suffer from a distinct disadvantage as
compared to the owners of the more seasoned Imperials. That disadvantage is
that we have far shorter history in troubleshooting and comparing notes
about the service history of our cars. I hope that you will be one more
contributor to the knowledge base on these awesome little cars. Posting a
help request, as you've done, is an important component to adding to that
knowledge base. We will do our best to offer to you whatever assistance we
can to solve your issues. Having said that, I'll try to add my 2 cents
(CDN) to the discussion. (about 1.6 cents US)

I am rapidly learning about the electrical system on my 1990 Imperial. I am
learning some of the strengths as well as the weaknesses. I would suggest
you check a few certain systems. If you don't have a test light, go out and
buy a GOOD ONE. Go ahead and check the following...

1. Test or have someone test the battery and charging system. These cars
are computer controlled and a computer running on a poor power source is
nothing to be relied upon.
2. Check ALL the fuses with your test light and/or a continuity tester.
This includes those under the hood near the brake master cylinder. Those
can be tricky. I once went through a huge effort and some expense to fix a
problem that was caused simply by a blown fuse in that fuse block. The fuse
LOOKED perfectly fine but was blown in such a way that I couldn't easily see
the problem.
3. Check the relays in the relay block under the hood near the brake master
cylinder. They should be colour coded and can be swapped around with
similar relays to test. Also check the relays in the relay block located
above the glove compartment. You may have to remove the glove box door to
access these.
4. Check all connections to the ignition switch and turn signal switch
located in the steering column. The tilt action of the column often causes
these connections to come loose. These switches are easily replaced if need
be. They are not terribly expensive either.

Check these out and report back your findings and we'll continue from there.

Fixing electrical problems is like eating an Elephant. You do it one bite
at a time.

hi all im new to the club i just purchased a '90 imp (3/90) in near perfect
condition from an old farmer it has all the bells and whistles and mark
cross
on it first question just curios the web site says that the mark cross
option
wasnt available until 91 mine also has factory steel rims with the wire caps
and your website says this year only came with alloy? any way like i said
the
car is in near mint so the smallest problems are noticeable im waiting on
parts
for the air ride suspension but the only other problem is i took it to an
automated car wash and during it the wipers started going and havent shutoff
since i had to unplug the wiper fuse also the cruise stopped working and the
engine seems to run a little ruff all this started at the wash the running
ruff
only shows in the gas mileage on the little pc in the car before i was
getting
about 18mpg now its about 15 mpg there is a click when the wipers come on
and it
appears to be coming from the computer box in the side panel under the glove
box any clues ? oh and on the 3.3 cheap easy fixes for better fuel economy
i.e. performance air filtration let me know. 1 last question the sticker in
the
drivers side rear window is that the production number? if so mine is 968

thanx,
Jon Palms
