Hi Guys,
I don't normally chime in on such things but I just wanted to add
something on this one....
The golf comment got me chuckling.
If you want boring TV- watch two guys FISHING!
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to fish, but just watching two other guys do
it has got to be on par with having my fingernails removed with a pair
of pliers!
That is, IF I can stay awake longer than 5 minutes into the show..these
programs are a sure cure for insomnia!
And BTW, my Father was the one who used to watch these shows, and as a
child/young adult, this was my experience.
As an adult, I just won't watch them...How does Babe Winkleman (?) keep
a job??????
And now more on topic-
Restictor plates were instituted in the late 60's-early 70's to SLOW the
cars down.
Back when the Daytona's and Superbird ruled the tracks they were already
hitting 200+ MPH. Drivers were getting killed ...a lot. I'm sure all
of you remember races back in that time frame that lead to at least 1
fatality..the last driver I can remember being killed was Dale
Earnhart. And that was 2-3 years ago. How many races have been run
safely since?
So NASCAR had to do something to slow them down, and that included the
restrictor plates, the regulation of ground effects/spoilers/etc.
Which leads us forward to today.
The whole reason for the templating/restictor plates/etc and the fact
the cars really do look the same comes down driver safety.
These days the engine is where the real competition takes place, and
yes, Ma Mopar has a sterling reputation that NASCAR continues to
discriminate against. The bad taste the dominance of the HEMI left in
their mouths 30+ years ago is still there today. That fact that Dodges
won at all is music to my ears. How many years did we go with NO Mopar
presence at all???? Only Furds and Chebbys to 'cheer' for??
So I guess what I am saying is that I am happy there is any motor sports
at all in today's 'sue today, collect tomorrow' American...
Just My Pennies,
Charles.
