[FWDLK] Tired ol' 230 L-Flathead

I'm persuaded that the 230 in my '55 Savoy is going to need rebuilding.  I
have a trustworthy local mechanic that did a great job rebuilding the front
end, and I plan to have him do the motor.  I have a question about parts,
and an approach to getting it done that I'd like comments on (since I don't
plan to pull the block myself).

1)  What parts can I stockpile ahead of time that he will likely need?  I
know that many will depend on wear (e.g., rings, bearings), but can many of
these parts be ordered through the local NAPA store, or am I going to have
to order through Egge or other specialty house?  Should I get valve guides
now as a matter of course?  And like that -- give me your advice about what
I'll need, and how I should proceed.

2)  My plan is to hobble to the mechanic's garage from where I'm storing the
car, about a mile away.  After he pulls the block, I'll have the car towed
back to my garage to get it out of his way while he works on the block at
his leisure.  In the meantime, I'll take the tranny, disassemble it and
replace any worn parts (it has popped out of second gear on me when
deaccelerating).  Then when he's ready, I'll tow the car back and have him
put the thing back together, with a new clutch, of course.  Sound like a
plan?
