John and Mary Beth - If a squirt of starter fluid starts it up immediately, then I doubt it's the timing. There is supposed to be a Carter glass bowl fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb. This glass bowl contains a stone-type filter and about an ounce of gas. When I first got my 58 Ply, it was missing this filter. I was having the same probs as you if the car sat for more than a few hours. With the addition of the above mentioned fuel filter, it started after two cranks, even if the car sat for a week. The engine is a stock 318 with a two barrel Stromberg carb and Carter fuel pump. Note: A modern plastic-type filter won't work, since it does not sit in a horizonal manner, thus causing the fuel to drain back.
