Seeing the subject of brakes has come up I just happened to
have a brake problem which appeared yesterday. NO BRAKE LITES. Got the
manual out and checked the appropriate wires/connections - negative
results. Swapped the brake lite switch with my parts car - still no lites
(by the way this is all happening on my 59 Plymouth). Lost a little bit of
brake fluid when swapping switch but thought I would check fluid anyway.
Should have done this first but the brakes (power brakes) worked just fine and
the resevoir cap is so difficult to get at under the brake booster. Had my
wife depress brake pedal - this compresses booster and makes the cap a little
easier to get at. MYSTERY SOLVED - discovered bolt securing cap was just a
tad loose - tightened bolt and PRESTO = brakes lites appeared. Apparently
pressure in the master cylinder must activate the switch which is attached to
the bottom of the master cylinder and the slightly loose bolt was preventing
maximum pressure to the switch. So if any of you fellas/gals out there
find yourself with no brake lites and have this sort of setup with the master
cylinder, be sure to check the tightness of the bolt holding down the
cover. John Z in WI
