I had a similar problem with a 96 Dodge pick up V8- At first, the oil
pressure will drop slightly, it will then normalize and later down to zero
on the highway; repair shop people told me that it had to be the pump due to
sludge build up--I knew it couldn't be sludge because the truck was well
maintained. After a week and a half of driving the truck around with no oil
pressure and no symptoms of engine failure, I finally decided to replace the
sensor located behind the engine block. It took me half an hour to replace
it and around $20 for the sensor. The guys at Firestone wanted $65/hour to
drop the oil pan and replace the oil pump!
If you've done good maintenance on your vehicle, look someplace else other
than the oil pump- These very seldom fail
