Fellow Lookers, You'll recall this recent message from Dave Stragand: > A fellow down in Australia is now reproducing the clear > backup lens (not the housing) for the 1958 Plymouth. > If anyone is interested, please just drop an email to > desoto58@xxxxxxxxxx I did just that, because I've picked up a fair number of '55 Plymouth backup lenses in my travels, but nothing to write home about. So I dropped George a line and asked him what he would want to reproduce them. Here is what he said: > Dan, if you can get some interest in the 55 Back-ups, > here is what I can do, for an order of 10 or more lenses, > I will do them for $30.00 us each, but I would need half > the money up front for the set-up costs, and the rest when > they are ready. The best way to pay would be an electronic > transfer, but as that costs a few bucks, I would pay the > postage on the new lenses to you, and it would be a good > idea to send me a couple of your best lenses, as they > may be better than mine, because mine have some cracks in > them. Now the pain about the whole thing is that it will > take some time, because for this to work, I need to soak > the originals in a special solution for as long as it > takes to get the chrome of them, that is the only way to > get a top quality reproduction, as I need to make them > perfectly clear, so that them can be rechromed, if the > surface is not perfect, it does not work, and somtimes it > takes weeks for it to come off! I could offer you the same > sort of deal on 55 Tail Light lenses, but at $25.00 us each > for an order over 10 or more, with half up front, the > difference being that I have a nice set of them to work from, > and I could start as soon as I received some money to order > more silicon. These prices would rise a bit for small orders > there after the origional deal. Buy the way, my reproduction > lenses are many times stronger than the originals, and damn > near impossible to break! looking forward to hearing from you > again, regards George. So if I can get 4 or more folks like myself who are interested, we could get these hard-to-find lenses reproduced for $60 a pair. I'd be willing to take delivery, and cover the U.S. postage to you. Also, I'll have to check to confirm that I have two imperfect lenses without cracks (I've since asked George if hairline cracks matter). By the way, the materials to do this job are very, very expensive -- that's why George has asked for half the payment up front. Contact me privately if you are interested. Dan, TWSAM '55 Savoy
