Last summer I replaced rear u-joint in my 59 Plymouth.
Didn't need front u-joint but inquired about it anyway. At CarQuest if I
remember right the price for front was around $40 and they had it. I think
NAPA had them too. Are we talking about same thing or is there more
involved than just the $40 joint? The 59 Plymouth service manual
supplement shows how to replace the ball & trunion type. What I found
kind of interesting is that it mentions a peice of number 40 polished jute twine
placed between the boot and propeller shaft. The twine (breather) lengthens the
life of the boot by relieving pressure build-up. The twine (or breather)
should always be reused whenever reassembling a u-joint (unquote). It says
prior to 59 a coil spring under the grease cover was used. John
