It can be done without the tool but is a pain whichever way you do it.

Do you understand what the rear looks like?  With a little effort you can
fabricate a way t do it.   My latest thought is using a putty knife to
protect the door panel and use a slightly bent screwdriver to release the
catch then.  I do have the original tool but it stays with me I'm afraid.
Its been broken twice but still the best way to go.

Have taken then of in the field with just two screwdrivers but wasn't trying
to save the door panel then.
