Re: [FWDLK] '57 starter problem

Are you sure it's not the neutral safety switch? Sounds like the exact
problem I had. When the engine is hot and doesn't start, ground the wire
from the neutral safety switch. BE SURE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL, and see if it
will start. If it does, replace the neutral safety switch or wire in some
kind of momentary contact button to ground the wire when this situation
happens.

Hi,
Sometimes ago i sent a message on the list about starter problem
when engine is hot: difficulties in "engaging" starter (seems
like a dead battery).
But yesterday the car wouldn't start: no "clicking" noise in
solenoid (only clicking noise was the starter relay). So after
some knocks on starter w/o results i remove the starter from car
and wired it with cables: no motion of solenoid when i touched
the solenoid plug and no revolution of starter when i touch the
starter terminal end (the whole bolted to solenoid). I remove the
solenoid and tried the starter alone: no revolution ! I remove
the end plate, look at the brushes (good), clean the collector
and try again: starter works so i put another solenoid which is
good.
I install the starter, starts the car 2 or 3 times, make a small
trip and park the car.

But today i try to start the car: same problem than yesterday !!
I test the solenoid i removed yesterday on another starter.. and
it works ..
So problem is in the starter: seems that the circuit is open in
the starter and that the culprit is the starter itself and not
the solenoid..
Does someone knows what could happen in the starter ?
