Re: [FWDLK] B/RB engine swap

Brion,

The old TorqueFlight transmission is not compatible with a 400 crank or any
crank from 1962 and later. You have a few possible solutions.

1. Rebuild your RB383 with modern internals. It?s not much different than a
newer block.
2. Update your RB383 block and crank with later heads, intake and exhaust
manifolds, cam, carb, etc.
3. Update to a 1962 Chrysler TorqueFlight with a 400 or any 1962 or later
B/RB engine. This transmission will have a brake drum at the end for parking
and emergencies. It can be updated to modern heavy-duty internals. Any 1962
to 1965 B727 TorqueFlight will have pushbutton shift, but only the 1962
Chrysler will have the rear brake drum.
4. Use your RB383 crank in a later engine with your old tranny. You should
verify the main bearing journals are the same diameter and width. The
easiest solution is a 426 wedge or 440 block, since they are RB blocks with
the same stroke. To use your old RB crank in a shorter stroke B block is
possible, if some material at the bottom of the cylinder bore is removed for
rod clearance or counterbalance weight clearance (I forget which). This is
the popular 400 with 440 crank modification into a 444.

Subject: [FWDLK] B/RB engine swap

Hi all. I think I want to replace the RB383 in my 60 Saratoga with a more
modern 400. It seems from what I read about them that any other B/RB will
work as a drop-in replacement for my old engine. Is that right? I'm
concerned about the new engine mounting to my old pushbutton transmission.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Brion
