Lou, 1. The lever to the left of the steering column controls the water valve located around the lower RH corner of the heater housing inside the car. When the lever is lowered, it opens the valve to allow more hot water flow into the heater core. 2. The 2 doors on the housing under the dash are closed to route fresh air into the heater and open for fresh air without heat. The doors can be opened or closed with your toe while driving. 3. The large horizontal lever under the dash controls the pop-up vent air intake in front of the windshield. 4. There are very nice detailed diagrams of the heater assembly in the factory Shop Manual, Section 1. User instructions are in the Owner's Manual.
