Charlotte will be held April 3-5 this year. I highly recommend it - the sap meet is not as big as Hershey, but it is probably the second largest meet in the country. The entire race track is filled with cars for sale, and the parts vendors have spread to fields outside the track.
Also, Charlotte tends to favor post-WWII cars and trucks, rather than pre-war brands that dominate Hershey. As an added bonus, there are lots of relatively cheap hotels around. If your friend from Germany is into cars, he'll love it!
