Hello All,
I asked my father this question. He owned a (non-Forward Look) 1959 Lincoln with wide whites in 1959. He swears by good old fashion Bon-Ami. It is similar to Ajax. You may be able to find it listed as a scouring powder at your local market. Dad says this is all anyone used in the 50's and early 60's and it never harmed anything but the gunk on the tire. Does require a bit of effort though.
Good Luck,
Charles.

Subject: [FWDLK] Cleaning whitewalls ??
Hi there old car nuts,
Just had my 6 yr old but new Coker 215/75/14 whitewalls put on my car. Oooooohhhh, nasty black greasy streaks all over the whitewalls after a few miles of driving, I guess from the sudsy water and general gunk on the rim. Anyone have any tips for removing this unsightly mess without wrecking the white on the whitewalls?
I'm in New Zealand, so USA whitewall cleaning stuff probably is not available here.
Thanks folks........
Dave.
