Walt, I've had a Jacobs ( http://www.jacobselectronics.com/ ) "Energy coil" on my 56 D500 engine for 10 years and probably 9000 miles. The engine analyzer says the points resistance is good and they looked good with a visual inspection this year. The dwell has dropped 2 degrees, but that is due to rubbing block wear, not a hot coil. If the dual 4 bbl carbs have gas in them from not sitting too long, it usually fires before making one revolution. Will this effect the older version points? maybe not last as long? Worthwhile addition? James, The purpose of a dual point distributor is to increase the dwell time so the ignition coil can charge longer, resulting in a bigger spark. This works best at higher rpms where the time to charge the coil is less. At normal rpms, the coil reaches saturation and maximum spark before the dwell time is over. In normal driving, you will see no difference. You would be much better off swapping your old marginal ignition coil for a modern high voltage coil which will yield 3 or 4 times the spark voltage, even with a single point distributor. Worthwhile addition? I am curious, has anyone added a dual point distributor to their FDLK car? Is it worth the upgrade?
