Well, I've spent more time, today, than I care to admit, (or type-about!) researching the relative 'merits' of the 56 D-500-1 & 57 D-500-1 (aka: D501). Right now, I need to find out how much more a 354 Hemi would weigh, than a 325 Hemi. Motor Life (5/56) tested a "340" H.P. 300B, with 9.00:1 c.r., and 3.36:1 rear end, and recorded a 0 - 60 time of 8.0 seconds, with TorqueFlite. The D501 was "lighter", had a MORE powerful engine (57 300C carbs& intake, Trucker free- flowing manifolds, 10.0:1 c.r., lighter valvetrain (58 fulie intake valves) and possibly a hotter cam (I'll provide 'stats', below, WITH an optional camshaft available, too), AND a rear end ratio of 3.73:1 !! That ratio allowed a 1/4 mile in only 2nd gear, maybe? Did the "B" have 7-leafspring suspension? I knows it dint have no T/bars!! Anyway, the standard camshaft (here you go, Dave H.!) : Intake Opens: 35 BTC; Closes: 65 ABC Exhaust " : 65 BTC; " : 25 ABC Intake Lift : .444 Exhaust " : .435 Optional Cam Specs: I. Both 56 D500-1 & D501's offered automatic transmissions, but the standard 56 'rear' was the 2-speed PowerfFlite w/a 3.73:1 ; the 57 was a T/Flite w/a 3.18:1 standard (lotsa torque). Funny thing is, absent a H.D. manual trannie--like from a 37 LaSalle--, the D501 was "better"-off with an Imp/300 T/Flite ! But wait, there's more.....
