-----Original Message----- From: Ron Waters <ronbo97@xxxxxxxxxxx> Reading the brakes thread has me thinking about this topic: Do people still restore cars ? -snip- BTW, I realize that it's YOUR CAR and you can do with it WHATEVER you want. So let's not get off-topic by going down that road. -snip- -But Ron, you are going precisely down that road! :-D I don't think there is any reason for debate, and this topic can be summed up with a few bullet points: 1) Yes, people still restore cars, but it takes a lot more time and money and SKILL than most people have to do a REAL restoration. In other words, There are more car enthusiasts than there are WEALTHY or TEchnically ADEPT car enthusiasts. (Most people can't weld, AND paint, AND machine...) So I surmise that it is a statistical inevitability that there will be far more "restified" cars. 2) Many people use their cars as a statement or a means of self expression, or to relive youth. Thus we have outrageous art-cars, street rods, and candy apple red lowriders, just like we have Late model Honda Civics with flashy stripes, ground effects, neon lights, etc. 3) Some people RACE, and some people just get a kick out of having powerful engines, thus: big block Valiants and Pintos with tubbed-out rear wheel wells. 4) Some people drive their old cars often, and feel a greater need for the car to look and act as original as possible for historical reference and accuracy. Others like to drive their old cars often, and enjoy the nostalgia, but place a greater value on safety, efficiency, comfort, and practicality. Thus: Disc brake conversions, self adjusting rear drums, electric radiator fans, seat belts, "Vintage Air," "Holley Pro-Jection" and quartz clock movements.
