Wow. I remember we looked at the Omni's as well as the Rabbits in 1980 when we were looking at new cars - I was about 6 - and I saw the VW logo under the hood of the Omni (or Horizon, I forget which) and wondered why they had the same motor. They don't look much different than a Rabbit really either, I thought maybe they were the same car. Heck even the pickup version wasn't much different than the VW. Apparently they were courting the Germans longer than most people realize, they just broke up with one to marry another one. Oh, my folks bought the Rabbit. Which lasted 6 years until the cat element broke, the car overheated (400 miles out on the road no less) and warped the head. Depreciation: $6800 in 1980 sold for $600 in 1986. I thought it was a cheap, cheezy car at that age (!) but then we had traded a big american car for it, and had another one in the garage. (Not MoPar though, both were from the General).
