Rich, and any others on the list, There is a simple tool to perform this task easily. It is called, amazingly, a Brake Return Spring tool. The key parts are similar to a Brake Spring Pliers, and are sometimes limited on some unique kinds of drum brakes, but the tool is surprisingly easy to use and very versatile. At one end is a rounded cup with a prong to assist in safely removing the return spring, and the enlongated and bent shaft is the prybar to replace them. You should be able to find various designs at any Automotive tool distributor, such as Sears, NAPA, Snap-On, Mac, Matco, and the like. Get a sturdy one, and it will last a lifetime. No one should ever use a vise-grips or the like to do this. If it slips, it could prove to be dangerous, and besides, it is really to much like work!
