The VIN tag, attached to the driver's hinge post, was unpainted metal (stainless steel, I believe). The ones in the 1960's were glued on and the holes were stamped into the tag and door post after being glued in place. If you ever remove one you will see it will sort of snap back into place. Also, prior to 1968 the Shipping Order Number was used to track the car, not the VIN. It is the SON that is stamped on the radiator crossmember, for one. And if you note the 1960 to 1964 VIN tags (and 1965 US tags?) the first two digits are stamped into the tag while the rest of the tag has pre-stamped raised numbers. The raised numbers were for the model year, assembly plant and sequential production number. The first two dgitis were for the make/engine, and series. It appears the tags were taken as the car moved down the line and the first two digits stamped to match the car being built. The data tag under the hood was painted and screwed into place. They were probably used as a tracking number in case the build sheet got lost. Also, if they were spotwelded afterwards, then the heat from the spotwelder would blacken the paint.
