Dave Homstad "corrected" a comment I made, recently, about my having said that rear axle bearings are "internally lubricated" (because I was/am not aware of any "external' locations where those bearings would receive any lubrication. Dave said that there are "plug(s) in the axle tube(s)" which (obviously) could be removed, to supply grease/lube to those bearings. I asked Dave where those 'plugs' were located, and he referred me to the 'bible (service manual)' Welllll, it took considerable "looking", to find the reference, which I had thought would "jump-out" at me, Re: rear axle bearing lubrication. What I discovered, was the following BOLD-type paragraph, in the discussion of the lubing of the FRONT wheel bearings(!), and is the only reference I could find on the "servicing of the rear axle bearings: "NOTE: rear wheel bearings require NO lubrication at any mileage or yearly intervals except in cases where the bearings are removed for any reason or new bearings are installed. In this case the bearings should be thoroughly cleaned and repacked before installing". So, I guess I wasn't really incorrect, AFAICS, the only reason to "pull" the center HUB assembly (after you 'separate' it from the outer drum - assembly) is to replace/service the bearings--which DON'T require 'any' servicing? Does anyone have any rear-axle-bearing "stories"???? Neil Vedder |
