About 3 years ago at a big car show in Englishtown, New Jersey I saw a beautiful 1957 all Black Custom Royal 2 door hardtop with red interior and a D501 trunk sticker and 354 Hemi with 1/4 bbl carburetor on it. The owner had all the documentation from Dodge which also including the original request to Dodge with the reason the car should be built special. The letter said the car was needed to be used by the police dept. in a town down south and that they did not want to buy the Ford Motor Co. 1957 Ford with Bandit Chaser engine unless they could not get the Dodge D501 package.( Probably to chase cars transporting Moon Shine.) If I remember correctly it did not have air but it did have just 1/4 bbl carb. The present owner bought it off the township when they ordered a replacement Dodge for it about 3 years later? The owner told me that a Big Dodge Dealership had a lot of pull back then and if it was for a police or special government agency, etc., that Chrysler Corporation cooperated with them back then.
