I don't know about yours in detail, but most work like this. There is a set of points which supplys power to an electical solenoid which pulls a spring loaded ratchet arm back. The spring takes over to make the arm ratchet back to the starting point which is what makes the clockworks work. When the arm gets to the set of points it starts the cycle all over again. Takes about 2 minutes, as I remember. The points get dirty usually and all you need to do is clean/file the contacts and you're in business again. While there, dust, clean and lightly lube everything. I'm sure that it will work on some variation of the above.
