[FWDLK] another torqueflite update

Several of you have asked that I keep you informed on the torqueflite
progress on my '57 Adventurer project. If you're not one of those folks,
delete this and move on. Thanks!

I mentioned in my last note that I poured 2 cans of Chemtool into the
transmission after removing a similar amount. The hope was that the
Chemtool would swell the seals, free up a stuck part, and clean everything
up. I had reverse but no forward gears.

I put the Chemtool in on Friday evening, and put the car through a series
of pushbutton gear changes to get the Chemtool through every nook and
cranny. With the car up on jackstands, the tires rotated properly,
indicating both forward and reverse movement.

Several folks cautioned that the Chemtool is a strong solvent, and
shouldn't be left in the tranny for long. I don't know "how long" is "too
long", but today I dropped the pan, cleaned out all the gunk that was
there, cleaned the filter, and drained the torque converter. Then I
refilled with clean fluid. I used Dexron III this time instead of the Type
A. Again, proper rotation with the car in the air when I went through the
buttons.

I lowered the car to the ground, and for the first time in 32 years, the
car went up and down the driveway UNDER ITS OWN POWER. Both forward and
reverse worked. I didn't get up enough speed, of course, to see if the
upshifts worked, but they seemed to work on the jackstands. I plan on
draining the pan and the torque converter one more time, assuring a proper
flush, and will leave the Dexron III in there.

Thanks again to all who offered suggestions on how to deal with this!

Ed Petrus
