Don is right, but there is one other thing about cheap wire, usually PVC insulated. PVC will cold flow when placed over a sharp or nearly sharp edge, such as a firewall or under dash bracket in a car. This means that the insulation will squish out of the way of the edge until the wire contacts the edge. If the edge is metal, you have a short and maybe a fire. This happened to me once, 3 days after I bought a car with an added on electric fuel pump. Luckily, the wire melted at the firewall and ended the short circuit without setting fire to the car. Proper automotive wire should have a tougher skin on the insulation to prevent breakthrough.

Here is my take on the wiring deal. If the wiring is right, (no shorts
etc) and if the circuits are properly fused this whole discuussion is a
moot point. To me it's like discussing which type of wood will burn
slower in a house fire. If you want the absolute protection add a
fusible link to every thing but your starter circuit but I don't
personally think that is necessary . Just be careful when repairing
wiring and put a fuse in the 12V supply at least when you test it the
first time. For what it's worth.
