Yeah.. to further lead us off topic, but... even a wrecked car can be repaired or sold for parts. Once it's burned out it's pretty much useless (although I think a few of those were used over and over for fires on some TV shows). So they'd use photographic tricks to layer the explosion on top - it didn't always use to be less expensive, but it's easier than having fire crews and so forth and figuring out how to do a controlled explosion. Last night I had on this cheesy sci-fi movie called Time Runner. If a cheap movie is a B movie, this thing is a D movie shot by college film students - in a community college. Mark Hamill doesn't know how to act anymore, either, or he needed to go to rehab after this thing was made... Anyhow, they had a building blow up and you could see it was clearly a phony explosion and even the fire out the windows was obviously phony afterwards. This thing looked like it had a budget that would have made Jack Benny look like a big spender, so they couldn't just go out and really burn a building they probably would have had to buy ($100,000 easily judging by the size) and pay a fire department to be on site to burn. By the end of the Dukes they were using really cheesy large scale models for stunts. So bad it was obvious and cheesy to me as an 11 year old kid when they first aired - you could tell when they were using various old film clips pasted together instead of an actual jump, too. They probably should have just hung a charger shell on some kind of off road truck chassis and jumped that - would have been no worse than the one Burt Reynolds movie where he's a stuntman and they jump a red Trans Am with this phony (and cheesy!!) jet booster in it. During the jump you see a jet powered funny car going over the gap... I can just imagine if you jumped a stock frame '57-8 Plymouth - the back of the car would fold up when you touched down. Frame rails in the back of those are so cheesy looking - anyone ever see these in demo derbys years ago, see how they fared? I am guessing a couple hits and the rearend was caved in up to the wheels - Bill K. ----- Original Message ----- From: <cpollock@xxxxxxxx> To: <L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, January 24, 2005 9:37 AM Subject: Re: [FWDLK] Riding the Bullet > Hi Ray, > I actually bought the 'Bullit' DVD to watch that scene. The Charger doesn't actually get blown up. If you watch it frame-by-frame then you can see it pass by the Gas Storage Tanks in the background as they blow up. No doubt it impacted SOMETHING and was destroyed, but the explosion didn't do it. A friend of mine pointed this out back in the old VCR days, and I could never really see it, but with the DVD it is crystal clear. > > Very interesting of course. > The Dukes are another story though. They killed a lot of 68-70 Chargers, and they inspired the destruction of many countless more. I personally have seen the effects of jumping these cars on the ones that I have found for sale, or in junkyards, etc. Never pretty. > > Enjoy! > Charles. > > > From: Ray Jones <hurst300@xxxxxxxxxxxx> > Date: 2005/01/23 Sun PM 03:22:48 EST > To: L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: Re: [FWDLK] Riding the Bullet > > What's as much fun is seeing that the cars that get blown up usually > have NO motor.
