Neil.
That is the best tip yet, I wish I'd thought to mention it.
After looking at all my window and crank handles, the clips are all
orientated in the back, so that downward pressure on the clip from above
(12 o'clock) when the handle is at 9 o'clock releases the tension at the
bottom of the clip, allowing it to disengage away from the slot in the
square shaft and come away.
When the handle is against the door panel, there is no way of knowing
what this clip looks like.
This knowledge could help to preserve a few of those fragile original
ForwardLook door panels.
I would gladly post a picture I have of this in detail, if someone
has a website where this could be loaded.

tab, facing upwards, so that your removal-tool's jaws  (or, your
modified-butter-knife) can

loose-tab, so that the removal of the crank arm can be made as easily as
possible, but also, you need to know "where" the loose-tab IS, so that
the 'jaws' can fit onto the loose-tab; in any of the other 3 directions,
the 'jaws' won't work!!
