I recently pulled the dash and interior pieces out of my '58 Coronet and sent it to the paint shop for a freshen-up. I've been able to pull everything out without a problem except for the steering column. It seems that even though I loosened the two bolts that attaches to the steering box, I'm only able to slide the column up about 2 inches. The column will rotate 360 degrees without difficulty but I can't seem to get it out all the way. The service manual doesn't provide much help either. Any ideas on how to get the column out so I can have it painted?
Does this question ever sound familiar....about 2 months ago I tried to remove my 58 300 D's column and asked the same question....No manual help and no one could answer my question. Well Chris, look very closely at the shaft of your column at the upper bearing and you will see a very fine snap wire spring. I refrain from calling it a snap ring because if it was, you would be able to see it very easily. The wire spring is very fine and has to be pulled out. When you do the column will almost fall off. If you need more explanation please email me...
