My 57 Plymouth Fury had the engine number (FP31-******) stamped on the top of the chassis rail, on the driver's side, about in line with the gap between the door and the rear quarter.
It is SO FAINT that I could understand why others had not seen it. Put it this way, even when I knew where it was on mine having seen it before, I struggled to find it while trying to show someone else one day before my chassis was painted.
Once it is painted, it is impossible to see again.
