By the late 1950s an automatic transmisision was so commmon it may as well
have been standard equipment on American cars, shortest of the cheapeast of
the cheap big three models.   You could order any way you wanted, but
generally after 1955 or so a manual 3-speed meamt you were just ordering the
cheapest possible new car.
