Re: [FWDLK] Timing a 331 Hemi

Hi Chuck,

You should set the crank pointer to 10 degrees, but make sure you are on the compression stroke, either by doing a 'thumb check' cranking over the engine slowly with your thumb on #1 spark plug hole to feel the compression  when it is comping up on #1, or by removing the driver's side valve cover to make sure neither #1 valve is 'moving' while the crank is turned a little back and forth in this position.

Then hook up an 'idiot light' (small 12v bulb, with no battery) to the points and ground, insert the distributor so it is pointing at the #1 plug wire, and rotate the disti slowly against the rotation direction (pull the vacuum advance toward you) until the light just comes on (when the points open).  Don't tighten the distributor until you are sure the oil pump is fully engaged and the base of the distributor drops down against the block and it's gasket for the last 1/8" by rotating the engine another turn or so.

It should start fine right there!

Good luck,

Bob

Subject: [FWDLK] Timing a 331 Hemi

Hi Every one I am trying to start the 331 hemi I just had rebuilt and wanted to ask if anyone had any tricks to setting the timing with the engine not running to start me off.  I read the book and it is confusing as to the proper way to do it. I think the book wants 10 Degs BTDC but if anyone has a more modern way of efficient way of doing it .  I would appreciate the help.  I have 3 weeks to have the car back together before the first car show of the season in Plattsburgh NY Thanks again for the help.  Chuck Deyoe   1955 New Yorker
