Re: [FWDLK] Oil is like Potato Chips

Hi Tom,
Ya know I did a little experiment the other day because of just this line of thinking.
I have a non-FWLK car (but still a Mopar) that requires synthetic oil.
So- generally I get it at Walmart (the ONLY thing I buy from them).
I have been using Mobil 1 since I bought the car new 2 years ago.  It is now (in Ohio) $22 for the 5 quart bottle.  Sitting WAY down th shelf was the Walmart brand called Supertech.
Both are all synthetic, both meet all of the codes listed on BOTH bottles, both say 'Energy Conserving'.  The final straw- in small print at the bottom of the Supertech bottle- Manufactured for Walmart in the USA.  Imagine that- something made in the USA.
The real kicker- The Supertech was $14 for the 5 quart bottle.
So- which one did I buy?  I think you can guess, and I do agree with you Tom.
When I put it in the car I could not tell the difference from the Mobil 1 I have been using all this time- except maybe it was a little lighter in color, but that was it.

Long story short- you decide, but in the future I'M not spending an extra 8 bucks for a fancy bottle.

Justt my pennies-
Charles.
BTW- saw a gorgeous 60 Saratoga not far from here in Cincinnati.  I was in Oxford, Ohio over the weekend and saw it cruising past- 2dr, Seafoam green with a white painted top.  Disappeared before I could turn around and get a better look.
If the owner is on this list- thumbs up!  Sweet Car!

The discussion about Pennzoil got me to digging around on the internet to see what I could learn about Pennzoil and its oil products.  What I found was that there have been many mergers and now one company sells Pennzoil, Quaker State and an oil exploration and pipeline company (which was previously partly owned by the senior George Bush.  It appears that much of the oil comes out of the Gulf now and from different areas of the world.  There is really no mention of oil coming from Penn. any where – not to say that is does not.

I use the potato chip analogy because of all of the mergers and spin offs of food companies which parallel the oil companies.  Anymore it is all about branding and carrying the best known brands forward.

In my mind it is all the same  when it meets the service codes, which have evolved over time.
