Hello,
I have a part just like your picture from my 56 DeSoto. It broke two
years ago sitting in my garage and took me 6 months to get it fixed. The
longest time was to find used but usable parts.
My car is also a 2 door so I was able to get at the door striker
bolts by removing the rear seat and inside panels and drilling out the
bolts. Then the door could be opened and the defective latch assembly
removed. I have one used latch assembly from what I think was a 55 model
car because it wasn't what I needed. I would gladly sell it to you if you
need one. Let me know and I can send you pictures.
Once you have drilled out the striker bolts, you can reach into the rear
quarter panel far enough to install regular nuts in place of the captured nuts
that were installed at the factory in case you destroy them in the drilling
process. Adjusting the striker plate is a chore after that but it does
work.
good luck, LeRoy

Subject: [FWDLK] 55 2 door new
yorker
Hello,
all...
On a '55 New Yorker 2
door...
The mechanism that opens the door
on the end of the rod from the handle (s) has broken off... inside and outside
handles seem intact
This part looks like it somehow
trips the lock wheel...(The lock that mates with the door
striker)
So the door is closed and we are
unable to open it to remove the lock mechanism held in by 4 screws from the
outside....
How do I open the door to get at
it???
I have a photo of the part that we
found in the door, it is attached to this email but do not know if it will
make it through the FL server, email me and I can send it to anyone who
may ID it for me...
Ideas??
Thank
you...
