I enjoy everyone's accounts of the Tulsa
event. I had been loosely planning to go, however I finally got a real job
(after about 9 months of searching) and didn't want to jeopardize that. I
know I would've enjoyed being there for the event simply for the historical
aspect...let alone all the great cars that were there. I still have the
feeling I'll get to see the car at some point...whether it be in a museum or as
it travels the car show circuit or who knows...maybe I have a long lost relative
from Tulsa and they won the car.
In regards to the Tulsarama event itself,
apparently I missed the part where it became a bad thing to make money.
Like Dave said, this has been a PR event from the beginning...even way back in
1957, that is all it was (back then they probably never thought the car they
buried would be worth more than the sticker price (which I guess is
debatable right now) or that people would come from all over the world
to see the old car).
Looking at it from another aspect, maybe it would
have seemed less like a money-making scheme if all these crazy car nuts had
just left it all alone and not bothered to show up to the event. That
way Tulsa wouldn't have been tempted to exploit all the tourists and make a
buck. Honestly, I can't say I've ever been to a car show or really any
other public event for that matter where money was not at least part of the
driving force behind it (every event will have costs to offset...even if it
is a charity car show and the money is going to a "good cause").
If it was me, I wouldn't want to throw an event
where I stand to lose money either...and you can bet the Coddington clan doesn't
work for free.

Which brings up a very good point -- from the beginning, this
has always been 100 percent a P.R. Event for Tulsa. We have just been
along for the ride.
While we were succesfully able to steer a few of the details,
P.R. Value always remained the highest priority.
