if i remember correctly, the spring actually pushes the accel pump down,
the linkage "allows" the plunger to push itself down to eject fuel into the
venturi, and thus the linkage fights the spring to return it to its resting spot
when the throttle closes.... the carters do this for sure as i just "rigged" the
candycane end of the accel linkage to the accel pump flat slotted shaft with a
wire tie on a dodge pickup this weekend for some tree-pulling and cinderblock
wall demolition...... puts the name dodge ram to the true
test!!
