Subject: Engine rebuilders?

Hi all,

Looks like my '59 Dodge 383 needs at LEAST a valve job, so I am considering
a full rebuild/detailing. I don't think I want to attempt it myself,
although I can pull the engine/trans. Can anyone recommend a shop in the
mid-Atlantic area?

Thanks,
Lou

Victor,

I was at Barrett Jackson 2006 and took my own close-up pictures of the 56
D500 Golden Lancer. It has oval 58 style air cleaners. I also know the
restorer personally and we have discussed the car. It does have dual quads,
but the intake manifold, carbs, and air cleaners are all incorrect. And it
has none of the dash one exhaust components.

While this car is not a dash one D500, it is a real D500 Golden Lancer. The
quality of the restoration is superb.

It just so happens that I just got through copying last years Barrot Jackson
auction to DVD from my DVR and there was a D 500 with 2 4's and the air
cleaners were perfectly round.

Jack,

The car you saw at Tulsarama is a re-creation of Lee Petty's 56 D500-1
racecar, not the original. It belongs to Bill Allen, in Atlanta, GA. It is
an original 56 D500 Coronet 2 door sedan manual trans car. The engine and
intake parts are correct, but it does not have the dash one exhaust stuff
installed yet. The body was provided by and the body restoration done by
Mopar Mel. Bill did everything else.

Subject: Re: [FWDLK] '56 D-500 2x4 Air Cleaners

Neal is correct on the D500-1 factory air cleaner. From the outside, it
looks
like one big round air cleaner that covers the two 4bbls, has a separate
base
plate and uses a paper element. The same air cleaner was used on the
factory Grand National optioned '56 Fury "High Performance" option. The
Fury
also could be had with the "dealer installed" optional 2X4 bbl, but this
option
featured the cast iron intake (as opposed to Grand National aluminum) with
chrome, louvered air cleaners that were of the same source of manufacturer
as used by the '56 Corvette with 2X4 option. I suspect D500 owners could
also get a "Dealer Installed" option as well. I photographed an original
owner
D500 at the Chrysler 300 National in Tennessee in '93 and it had the
Corvette
louvered air cleaners for what that may be worth. For those who attended
Tulsarama, there was a restored Lee Petty '56 Dodge D500-1 race car in the
Exhibit Hall car show. It had the Factory Air Cleaner described above. I
took
some photos of the car and a close up of the air cleaner - due to the indoor
timed exposure in that part of the hall, my photos aren't crisp, but, good
enough to show what we're talking about. If anyone is interested, email me
and I will return a jpeg of it.

Dave's comment about "superb restoration" in Re: the 56 Golden Lancer
2-dr @ the 56 B-J forced me to go back &
look at my own photographs of this car, as "superb restoration" wasn't
in my memory-bank, regarding the car (regardless
of the money which it drew, that year.; I understand that its buyer
tried to turn the car, last year, & took a 100K+ loss
on his investment, IIRC).

Anyway, as far as 'superb restoration' is concerned (and the car was
roped-off at the B-J, so that a close inspection of its
undercarriage and interior was not possible) ; the car has a very-heavy,
obvious, clear-coat paint job, and has modern
stainless steel turn-down hose clamps, red-painted 1958+ "football" air
cleaners, and oh yeah : AFB dual carbs, instead
of the WCFB's, and a much-too-nicely-bent fuel line, and incorrect
fuel-routing, to the carbs.

Altho misrepresentation might be construed as an advertising defect, the
seller claimed (looking at his 'billboard', posted next to the car)
that THIS: " Golden Lancer is the only dual-quad Hemi (D500-1)
manufactured. Also, that the Golden Lancers had "D500 badging
and ...heavy duty chassis and performance group-standard."

"A total of only 50 Golden Lancers were ever manufactured, although
Dodge scheduled 125 for production. All of the Golden Lancers
came equipped with the D500 powerplant and performance upgrades. This
Golden Lancer is the only one manufactured with the
extra-duty race ready D500-1 chassis and engine option. Only a hand full
of production cars were ever equipped with this NASCAR
inspired D500-1 Performance Option.

With 52,780 original miles and a well preserved California car its
entire life, the recently completed nut and bolt restoration on this
outstanding Lancer was made simple. Boasting of all its original
sheetmetal and all of its original drivetrain, this one-of-a-kind Custom
Royal Golden Lancer is completely irreplaceable. "

Yeah, right. Tim, unfortunately, it appears that you do not have the
only D-500-1 which was configured into a Custom Royal!!!

The B-J AIN'T "Pebble Beach" , but, rather, a much-glorified modern day
camel-market (but, where you CAN'T closely examine the camels!)

shocks but put them on a few years ago and dont have the part numbers handy.
For the front you have to grind the bottom mount to fit. I found this on
the Imperial site and I *THINK* the KYB part number list for Imperials is
the same to use for a DPDC car:

 <http://www.imperialclub.org./Repair/Springs/shocks.htm>
http://www.imperialclub.org./Repair/Springs/shocks.htm

>From Chris:

KYB makes a superb shock - far superior to anything else on the market. KG
4507's in the front. KG5511 in the rear.

The lower mounts on the front shocks need to be trimmed slightly, which is
why they are not cataloged. But they give outstanding ride and performance
once installed.

They are about $32 each, and worth it.

Follow-up question from Bruce:

Thanks for the KYB tip. Does anyone know if the same model numbers should
fit a '57 post sedan? Also, what part of the shock needs to be trimmed a
little?

Reply from Jay:

The front KYB shock needs to have it's lower bushing shortened from 1.50 to
1.25 inches. This is what I had to do for my installation. My guess is that
the same mod needs to be made for other years as well.

Here is the website:

There is an online parts catalog as a PDF.
I have enclosed it with this email, but I don't see a listing for a 1958

the same...

Take Care,
