I graduated, if you will, from using 'fitted' mattress pads on the
seats, to the clear covers.
My local upholstery shop had said that the clear covers would cause the
underlying
upholstery to deteriorate (here in the hot dry SoWest).
I finally decided to install the clear seat covers when I got
tired-enough of seeing original condition cars,
at the Pomona Swap Meet, whose ONLY deficiencies with having had seat
covers be installed on them,
was where the seat covers may have SEPARATED at a seam, allowing
sun/dirt/whatever to
gain access to the upholstery.
If a car's not driven very much, the seat covers are not really necessary.
If you cringe, every time a passenger plops down on your investment,
you should protect it,
with something.

I was also concerned about the flimsy NOS inserts on my 58 Plymouth wearing
out after a few years. I ended up getting some white beach towels from
Walmart for about $5 each. I leave them on the seats all the time except
when I'm showing the car. If anyone follows up on this idea, be sure to get
white, as some of the multicolored towels use dies that are less than
colorfast.
