From what I understand, the overhaul of a P/S gearbox is no big deal,
and O/H
kits are reportedly available.
About 10+ years ago, my car's OEM gearbox began leaking like a sieve, as
evidenced
by the P/S pump resevoir always needing a refill, with no leakage at the
pump.
That said, and not knowing what-all is/was involved
adjustment/bushing-wise in an O/H,
AND not wanting to have my car's gearbox to get lost or damaged or
otherwise NOT be
able to be reinstalled in my car, and not wanting my car to be
non-drivable for any
prolonged time.....(in other words: trying to avoid any unpleasant
surprises).....
I bought a w.y. gearbox from Moore's in SD, for $250.00, and had THEM
ship it to Lares,
where they proceeded to charge me $600.00 (!!--dunno what they charge,
now) for the O/H
of that gearbox; their standard price for the job.
When I received it from Lares (within about a reasonable 3-weeks after
buying it, at Moore's,
and, actually seeing it for the first time) I found that Lares had
painted it gloss black, right over
the nasty oxidized finish of that w.y. piece.
I stripped the paint off, easily enough, and then wire-wheeled the
gearbox case to a bright-
shiny appearance, and then clear-coated it.
Took my like-new, now, w.y. gearbox to my local car-shop and they had
no difficulties in removing
my car's 45 y.o. (?-then) OEM gearbox and installing Lares' gearbox.
I had some concern about how well that O/H'ed w.y. guy would work , but
it has operated
perfectly, and with great precision (that's right: I said precision ;
with a rebuilt suspension,
H.D. strut bushings from Just Suspension, and gas shocks, and a
positive-caster alignment and
good tires, your car, too, can have mind-boggling,
take-your-hands-off-the-wheel, center-feel
straight-line steering performance).
So, despite the costs involved (down-time was nil thanks to the purchase
of that donor-gearbox)
I continue to be very satisfied with Lares' work----notwithstanding
their cheapo effort to paint
over the corrosion on that w.y. gearbox.
And, I still have my car's OEM gearbox to use as an O/H candidate, or to
sell to anyone who
wants to replicate my O/H protocol.

I just did that job on a 55 New Yorker...
Was fairly painless, but you do need to remove the steering wheel to
free the nut at that end, pull the column down thru the floor board, 4
bolts 7/16" on the cover there 4 bolts on the clamp at the dash
support, 3 bolts on the frame 5/8' on the outside and 13/16" on the
inside if yours are like the 55 none were too tight or frozen, but
they can be dirty and grease caked.....
The hardest part was separating the joint at the steering linkage.
Who will do your rebuild? Have you gotten any cost quotes?
Dave H recommends "Lares Corporation"
http://www.larescorp.com/index.html they are close to me but just
wondering about price.

*Subject:* [FWDLK] ADVICE ON STEERING GEAR REMOVAL
Hello Group
Unfortunately my power steering mechanism in my 59 PLYMOUTH is
leaking and needs a rebuild.
The removal of the box seems clear and not too hard since the
egine is out of the car,,but any words of experience???
Can I leave the steering wheel and upper column intact and do
everything by lowering the mechanism out from underneath??
Thanks to all
