It sounds to me like someone is confused a D500-8181 would be consistant with a 1956 D500 engine, the casting number on the block would be correct for both years of Dodge engine D500s it should have a date on it as well. I have a 58 Coronet engine with the same casting number and it is a poly, so the ID number is the key. A 354 engine would not have that casting number, hope this helps Tim

     D-500 8181 - This is a D500 made in Detroit.  8181 is probably the numerical sequence of this engine in the D500 production.  According to my references, this is only a 354 cid engine
