look at it this way... oil is the by-product of decayed pre-historic life--- so its already a few million years old... our lifetime wont degrade it! intermittent use can cause moisture to condense in an engine, causing acidic deposits, other than impurities/moisture, the oil deteriorates with usage, mixing with blow-by gases, unburnt fuel , etc.... there are studies that will give evidence in either direction, i have some cars that have the same oil for.... actually the longest is my mother's survivor chevelle.... i changed the oil last in 1998 i think, since then it took a 4hr trip upstate, then was stored 6 yrs, and now goes out once every 2 months it seems.... turned 1000 miles last night since 1997!!!! my dialy drivers get the oil changed every 3000 miles, including my volvo that recommends 5000 intervals, and my 50s 60s and 70s [daily drivers] get changed every 3000 miles or 6 months whichever comes first... considering i only pleasure drive any vehicle i own for the past [almost] 2 yrs now.... so if it looks clean, smells clean [not gassy or varnished] than you're fine... this is from years of experience and over 200 perfectly-operating cars i've owned, no labratory testing! change it every 3000 miles... and just remember to add STP blue oil treatment for the highest level of ZDDP available outside of actual zinc additives that rae now marketed and highly overpriced. here's a hint i was told by one of the new machine shops i just came across.... get a bottle of break-in lube... its saturated with ZDDP, 2oz to an oil change is said to be plenty... i havent yet tried it since i'm not 100%sure what else it contains -----Original Message----- From: eddee@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To: L-FORWARDLOOK@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wed, 22 Apr 2009 4:07 pm Subject: [FWDLK] MOTOR OIL QUESTION HELLO MEMBERS
Do modern premium oils deteriorate over time?????????????????
I put very minimal use on my engines. The oil stays nice and clear and clean probably for that reason. Should the oil be changed anyway after a period of time??
ie: 6 mos--1 year,,,2 year??
I guess the real question is does the oil deteriorate after a period of time even with minimal useage and loose its lubricating characteristisc???
I always thought that the 'modern' premium oils have additaves to keep it ageless.
I have had second grade oil in my lawn mower for 3 years--its certainly used a lot more than my cars--and although a bit dirty, it sure feels like new. Just using that as an example
