There was also a 3rd later version "D500 Special" with just the D500 engine and no suspension or brake upgrades.
D500 12 inch Chrysler brakes are 12 x 2 with 1/2-20 studs.
D500-1 12 inch Imperial brakes are 12 x 2 1/2 with 9/16 studs, and a 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern.

So,
Let's review ....
A Standard D-500 got 12" Chrysler brakes, stiffer springs fore and aft, a 315 short block with Hemi top end, and a 4bbl carb
A Standard D-500-1 got 12" Imperial brakes, stiffer springs fore and aft, a 315 short block with Hemi top end, and 2 4bbl carbs.
Can someone in the know explain the specific differences between these two and add anything I missed ?

Subject: Re: [FWDLK] 1956 Dodge D501 vert sold at BJ
Just to add to what Tim and Ron have said, the only true original 56 D500-1 cars currently known are Tim's and Gary's. The original D500-1 package was really just a chassis package: Imperial brakes and wheels, stiff springs, HD 3 speed manual tranny. The dual quad carbs and huge exhaust manifolds were added later as a "Double four-barrel Carburetor Group" to existing D500-1 cars when the parts became available. They were also included on complete factory built later cars.
It is rumored that only 100 of the original intake manifolds were made. These are very rare. Many were probably destroyed with their cars. I once asked Arnie Beswick what happened to his D500-1. He sold it to a local guy who lost a race with a train a little while later.
In 1957, Offenhauser made a 2x4 intake manifold used on the 57 Super D500 325 Hemi. They also sold this as an aftermarket part up to today. These are easy to find, even new. This is what is on most of the claimed D500-1 cars sold today, including the convert at B-J, and the Golden Lancer sold there a couple of years ago.
I met a fellow years ago who ordered a D500-1 car, but only received a standard single 4 bbl D500. I guess he had no racing connections. He then ordered the 2x4 manifold over the parts counter, but never installed it on the car. So I bought it from him. Maybe I'll use it someday.

Yes I agree it seems like all the D500-1 cars that have gone thru Barret Jackson are conversions from D500 Modes at best. I still only have a build sheet confirmation of one other true Dash One Model from 56 out of all the cars that have been brought to my attention. That being Gary Richards car he is restoring in California. That doesn't mean that there are not others, they just are not confirmed by me or anyone I know. And to continue to update facts on the D500-1 Model... Bernie Hentges one of 18 surviving drivers of the 1959 Daytona 500 confirmed that he picked up his 1956 D500-1 complete with the Dual Quad racing engine package from the factory and drove it home. He also recounted knowing other drivers who received the upgraded factory Dash One cars for racing purposes. This first hand information from the very active 74 year old Hentges has dispelled all notions that cars were only produced with the parts in the trunk, so this error should be corrected whenever possible.
