The closest semblance to this real world "road" experience is in the "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" movie. 50's-60's 'Frontier Town' TV/movie streets (including the Clint Eastwood "High Plains Drifter" ilk)...might have a couple occurences of road-apples in them...but, as a rule, their towns' roads were antiseptically clean and hard-packed. "Fire at the Mine" is the next movie in this genre.
