that still sounds like a 59 trans, the air cooled trannies are 57-mid58 units, by april/58 production, power and torqueflites switched to liquid cooling. The torqueflite debuts in the 56 Imperial, but was available across the board from 57-up, the Iron TF years are 56-61, all will have the parking brake on the tailshaft, all will b cable shifted. the 57-early 60 torqueflites have an aluminum housing that bolts to the iron body, the cable is adjusted by a sliding retaining bracket, by mid 60 an all 61, iron TFs have an adjuster wheel, like the 62-65 727A [modern aluminum TF]
so, if its Iron, the torque converter will be an 8 bolt, non-flexplate type converter, and will work with 56-61 torqyue/powerflites. A trick I do, since I'm one of the last Iron TF/PF builders around, is on performance applications, I do my 300/Fury spec valve body and management modifications, and run a powerflite converter ahead of the torqueflite, the spline count on input shaft and stator support are the same as well as pup drive, but you gain stall speed from the smaler diameter converter, which helps with aftermarket cams in hot poly blocks or early B/RBs where folks don't choose to upgrade to A727s
any questions - send me a pic of the trans or just look at the date, typically on the drivers' side of the trans case located between the TV linkage area and rear pump housing

It has the parking brake on the tail shaft and has 3 speeds is water cooled and has the push buttons, so I wonder what year it is? The previous owner was less then forth coming on other issues that have arisen so maybe he just was mistaken when he told me the TF was a '59…..
How can I positively id this trans?

Also- you should just run a 62-65 cable shift 727 instead of the iron trans...
and as for the TV linkage [not really [only] kickdown linkage].... you can use the PF bellcrank, but cut it and moce the pivot ball to be 1/4" down from the throttle rod attachment pivot ball, the fulcrum point from TF to PF is substantially different, as is the travel of the throttle valve in the valve body. lengthen your rod from the bellcrank to the trans lever, start with WOT as full TV pressure, and work donw from there to tailor you shift points.
