George,
I suggest the complete driveline change out. A 1966-73 B-Body (or
perhaps wider application) should easily fit under your ‘56 Dodge chassis.
I used a 1966 Charger drum to drum rear end and converted it to disc brakes
while using the original 56 e-brake handle and cable connecting it to a pair of
made-to-order cables to actuate the “parking brake feature” on the new rear end;
easy to do; will try to attach pictures but if they do not come through just
email me at
glpavlovich@xxxxxxx and I
will send you all the necessary information and pics.
Immense value in changing from the old 56 rear end for the following
reasons:
No swedged axles so you may easily service rear brakes, be they drum or
disc.
Larger brake pads or disc system for improved stopping.
Less expense & hassle with this upgraded system.
All ratios of New ring & pinions are available with the 1966 & up
third member/rear end setup.
Minor install mods to do the entire rear end swap – moving spring perches
(new perches from any vendor) adding new or good used shock mounts to attach to
your new rearend/existing or new leaf spring package...
Definitely keep your 727 that mates with your 440 for the reasons
mentioned.
