| I find input like this thread interesting, and sometimes informative. Where is goes sideways for me, is my general disdain for the numbers-matching Rainman nerds going all nutter about what is and isn’t correct, with some snooty air of authority about what is what.
It is all good and fine to know the subtle details, but the attitude some get over this stuff is the reason I do not do car shows or associate with any organized groups.
I began chasing these cars when they were $50 beaters, and wrecking yards were full of them. Dealers still had large NOS parts inventories, and a person interested in these cars could learn a lot simply by going out and looking. Unlike today, where cars like ours are akin to alien spacecraft landing on the street.
My interest was never some by-the-book, numbers matching, factory rulebook perfect example of dome fantasy car we all dreamed of. Rather, it was capturing a disappearing everyday vision of what the American scene looked like when I was a kid. Not the fantasy burger stand or sock hop teenage angst BS made iconic by American Graffiti, but the ordinary grocery store parking lot, or small town street on any day America …. where cars were styling and cool, but also “just cars”, where “Dad” might have installed a wrong year, or even wrong make underhood light in his finned beast because it worked, and for no other reason. As long as it looks like it was done in 1961, I find THAT to be just part of the “fabric”, … the story, that these cars tell us.
When some blowhard “know-it-all” starts telling me that his way is the only way to do it right, that is where I just walk away and go enjoy my old junk the way I’ve been doing it now for 50 years.
Keep posting, David. Enjoy yourself through the things you enjoy and don’t let the attitude people be a wet blanket on your good times.
