Hi gang -
Somewhere (I think at Chryslers @ Carlisle), I saw a replacement saddle for
a floor jack that elevated the saddle about six inches above the arm by way
of a long neck. Has anyone seen something like this for sale ?

Subject: Mechanical help in Baltimore for a '66 300
Hi all,
Strange request. I'm looking for someone who might be
able to serve as my mechanical guide in Baltimore this
weekend, when I hope to drop in my newly-rebuilt 413
engine back into my '66 300.
Up until this point I've been working with a very nice
older gentleman who unfortunately, about a month ago,
contracted a spinal infection. He has been unable to
continue on a normal work routine and as a result the
final stage of the work has come to a halt.
The engine has been rebuilt by L&M motors in
Baltimore. The carborateur and radiator have also been
rebuilt at other shops in the area. All are painted,
primed and ready to drop in. All neccessary gaskets,
mounts, wires, hoses, kits, etc. have been purchased
and stand ready for installation. The only thing I'm
missing now is the most critical ingredient for
successful engine work: knowledge.
My hope is this...I'm 32 years old, mechanically
inclined but moderately experienced when it comes to
work on the car. I am however very capable when it
comes to doing the heavy lifting and bolt tightening.
What I need now is someone to stand over me and say do
this/do that. With proper preparation and my brother
as help, I'm fairly certain the whole process won't
take more than a day.
I'm proposing to execute this engine drop-in this
Saturday, November 3rd. I should be able to take a day
off work on Friday to make doubly sure everything is
ready to go for the big day. I will of course be more
than happy to generously compensate in cash on the day
any engine doctor who can make this unusual house
call.
Does anyone have the least bit of interest in this
endeavor, or know anyone that might?

Way back in the 60's, maybe early 70's, I talked with a retired NJ highway
patrolman and he told me that the scariest thrill he got out of driving a 300
with the troop was chasing down the center median at over 130 MPH. He said
it was quite a "spine tingling" bumpy ride. I don't recall whether he
referred to a C or a D. So they must have been using them.

Bruce,
No idea how a 413 has ended up in my '66. The car has
had two other owner besides myself, one of which was
my late grandfather, and the other being his good
friend and neighbor. I am certain that both of them
did little more than regular maintenance on the car.
Unfortunately, like my grandfather the neighbor has
passed away, so the story may have to remain a
mystery.
Nevertheless the door and engine plate numbers clearly
show the engine to be a 413.
Wheelcovers are '65's though. Food for thought. Thanks
for the sentiments.

Chrysler Announces Something Special; Chrysler to Build Limited Run of 300M
Specials
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Looking for something special?
In the tradition of classic special edition Chrysler 300s, Chrysler will
build a limited run of its new 2002 300M Special starting November 5. A
total of 8,500 Chrysler 300M Specials will be built, with a manufacturer's
suggested retail price (MSRP) of $32,595, which includes $655 for
destination.
``In 1960, we introduced a limited run of 300F Specials built off of our
300F letter series car,'' said Tom Marinelli, Vice President, Chrysler/Jeep®
Global Brand Center. ``We're continuing our proud heritage with the
introduction of our 2002 Chrysler 300M Special. For just over $32,000, you
can have that something special in your garage.''
Similar to European ``tuners,'' Chrysler 300M Special features ground
effects that surround the vehicle's lower body while ride height is lowered
one-half inch. The car has a more assertive stance and even lower
aerodynamic drag than the stock Chrysler 300M.
Chrysler 300M Special's aerodynamic refinements are complemented with large
18-inch wheels and P245/45ZR18 uni-directional Michelin Pilot performance
tires which improve handling. Additional features include a unique, higher
performance brake system, a performance-tuned suspension, firm strut
damping, tall rear jounce bumpers, and 17:1 ratio firm-feel steering gear
which enhances on-center response characteristics.
The Chrysler 300M Special produces 255 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 258 ft.-
lb. of torque at 3900 rpm, making it the most powerful version of the
company's 3.5-liter SOHC V-6 engine. Chrysler 300M Special also features
twin exhaust pipes integrated into the lower rear fascia, performance-tuned
AutoStick® with a 3.89 overall top gear ratio, a 150-mph speedometer and
Chrysler 300M Special badging. Headlamps are high intensity discharge (HID)
which are 2.5 times brighter than standard halogen lamps.
Inside Chrysler 300M Special, the instrument panel and doors have a carbon
fiber appearance for a sporty yet contemporary feel. Special door sill
plates are brushed aluminum. Unique leather ``waterfall style'' seats are
available in a monochromatic Deep Slate Gray or a Light Taupe/Deep Slate
interior two-tone. Exterior color choices on the 300M Special are Black,
Deep Sapphire Blue and Bright Silver. All three colors are paired with a
lower exterior color of Neutral Gray Metallic for the lower sills.
Additional standard features on the 2002 Chrysler 300M Special include a
tire pressure monitoring system, Electronic Brake Distribution to the ABS

While floor jacks are being considered does anyone know if there is a hard
rubber or plastic cover available for the jack.
Also, I place a 2"x6" block with a 1/2" hole on the jack when using it to
lift my modern cars that have the pegs and lifting pads under the door
sills. A hard plastic or rubber block with a 1/2" hole to fit the jack
would be handy - has anyone seen one like that?

a trooper who drove them then, but I think thr cars were all 4 door models,
as are virtually all police cars. I think they had our engines in the four
door models, along with the heavy duty suspension, etc. Probably cost as
much as a letter car, but they were utilitarian vehicles, nonetheless.

Illinois Tollway Authority had fleet of '62 4-door Chrysler's with 413, dual quad set-up and two speed axles. These could cruise in 140MPH range and were capable of nearly 160MPH. I don't know what tires they had, but in '64 and '65 when pulled from service they showed up on the Western Avenue schlock lots for $600 to $1,000, which is where I saw them. Heard somewhere there were 50 delivered as a "super-patrol" option, needed because there was a rumor the newly opened system, being private, did not have speed limits. I saw simular cars.
Don't remember what body styles they had but the Maryland Park Police
had 413's with dual quads and all the hot stuff. We used to race them
with my buddy's '57 Fury...if you won, you didn't get a ticket! We usta
compare engines.
Maryland State Police had at least one '57('58?) Ford which was
supercharged, and another friend had one of these also.
More racing on the roads in those days than on the tracks. Many a mile
we traveled in triple digits........young and dumb!

Folks:
When I had a K convert in 1972, I met a guy working in an auto parts store
in Deer Park, LI, NY (only one open on a Sunday in Suffolk County in those
days!). He was from NJ and went out of his way to mention that the car was
"like the pursuit troopers on the Jersey Turnpike had back then". I know he
was not referring to a convert, but the overall car and it's mechanical
components. This is the first I've heard of this reference in nearly 30
years, but still seems corroborative!
