Can you forward the following question to the 300 club? Picture this: I decide to remove the A/C clutch from our '62 300 the other day & actually read the service manual on the correct way to remove it. I run to the hardware store, buy the 5/8 x 2 1/2" cap screw the manual calls for & try to screw it into the clutch. No dice, way too big. So I go back to the hardware store & buy a 1/2 x 2 1/2" cap screw. No dice, too small. I then decide to go to our '62 NY wagon. Same clutch, with the same diameter threads that neither cap screw wants to screw into. So... * Am I a moron? * Is the service manual wrong? * Is there another option to popping the magnetic clutch off? * Do I try to be even more persistent and make the 5/8 cap screw go into the clutch? Any help is much appreciated!!! The latest point up for discussion is the probability that from 1957 to 1958 there was a change in the positioning of the spot-welded coil bracket base on the left side valve cover of the 300 C and D motors. The current assumption is this: If you have a 300C or D up through VIN #1585, the bracket is positioned above the letter "E" in the "FIREPOWER" script. This places the coil extremely close to the expanded brake booster. If you have a 300D after VIN #1585, the bracket is positioned above the letter "W" in the "FIREPOWER" script. This places the coil some 2+" away from the expanded brake booster. As far as what the assorted parts books say: LEFT VALVE COVER 1735 780 1957 and 1958 300 motors up through D VIN#1585 1851 720 1957 300 and NYer "power pac" (dual quads, no solid lifters option) motors 1944 626 1958 300 motor after VIN #1585 The parts book indicates there are THREE different valve covers! I don't know what that third variation might be nor is there any way for me to know what #s should be assigned to the two assumptions written out above! Your comments are welcome. What valve cover coil bracket placement is on your C? your D? Any ideas on a third variant? C Wayne For C Questions (The C stands either for this guy is "Crazy for Cs" or "Cs are driving him Crazy". I did have a set of replacement rocker panels for my project. There are at least 2 ways these are made. One way is a "correct" fit and shape replacement. The other way is a cover that fits OVER the originals. This is what I had, and my bodyshop man had to rework them to be true replacements instead of caps. -- Paul Holmgren Hoosier Corps #33, L-6 2 57 300-C's in Indy ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 10 Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 23:53:46 EST From: n81cw@xxxxxxx Subject: Rust repair on a 300H Folks I have a 300H project in need of some serious rust repair.
